The Propionic Acid Bacteria on the Mechanism of Glucose Dissimilation* by H. G. Wood

چکیده
The fundamental investigations of Virtanen (1923, 1925), Virtanen and Karstrom (1931), and van Niel (1928) on the mechanism of glucose dissimilation by the propionic acid bacteria have led to the proposal that glucose after preliminary phosphorylation is converted into 2 molecules of the C) type. Virtanen upon theoretical considerations concludes that lactic acid is an intermediate product of the fermentation. This investigator also accepts a secondary splitting of the glucose into Cd and CZ compounds. This step does not involve phosphorylation. Van Niel, however, proposes that 1 molecule of methylglyoxal, formed by the sugar cleavage, is oxidized through pyruvic acid to acetic acid and COZ, while 2 molecules of methylglyoxal are reduced to propionic acid. Neither the lactic acid nor methylglyoxal was demonstrated in fermentations by these investigators. Foote, Fred, and Peterson (1930), however, have reported the production of lactic acid from glucose by one culture of a considerable number studied. Although no marked disagreement has arisen concerning the mechanism of the formation of propionic acid, acetic acid, and CO*, there is little agreement as to the method of formation of the succinic acid which is produced in the propionic acid fermentation. Virtanen first noted the production of succinic acid in glucose fermentations and suggested that it was formed by a 2and 4carbon cleavage of the glucose molecule to succinic acid and acetaldehyde. On the other hand van Niel believes that the

The Aerobic Dissimilation of Lactic Acid by the Propionic Acid Bacteria.
The hydrogen reacts with lactic acid to form propionic acid. Pyruvic acid has been isolated from the fermentation of glucose (1934) and of lactic acid (unpublished data) by Wood and Werkman. These investigators supported Van Niel's proposed dissimilation of pyruvic acid inasmuch as the occurrence of acetaldehyde could not be demonstrated. Little information is available concerning the aerobic d...
متن کاملThe utilisation of CO(2) in the dissimilation of glycerol by the propionic acid bacteria.
This paper by Wood and Werkman is truly outstanding. First, it is a classical example of determination of the path of a fermentation by careful quantitative analyses of substrates consumed and products formed. Second and most importantly, the results led to the discovery of CO2 fixation by heterotrophic bacteria. The dogma at the time the work was done and as expressed in textbooks held that on...

Preliminary investigations have shown that Clostridium acetobutylicum and related butyric-acid butyl-alcohol bacteria, fail to develop in a synthetic medium containing only ammonium sulphate, inorganic salts and glucose. These results suggest that perhaps the organisms require complex nitrogen compounds or some specific growth factor. Wood, Tatum and Peterson (1937), Wood, Andersen and Werkman ...
متن کاملThe effects of a microbial inoculant and formic acid as silage additives on chemical composition, ruminal degradability and nutrient digestibility of corn silage in sheep
The effects of a microbial inoculant (containing propionic and lactic acid bacteria) and formic acid onchemical composition, ruminal degradability of dry matter (DM) and nutrient digestibility of corn silage wereexamined. Whole-plant corn was ensiled for 60 days in plastic polyethylene bags, and three treatments werecompared, 1: control (no additive), 2: Propionibacterium acidipropionici plus L...
متن کاملThe Metabolism of [ 1 - _ 4 C ] Glucose in an Enzyme System from Propionibacterium
Wood, Stjernholn & Leaver (1955) have proposed that propionic acid fermentation may involve the simultaneous occurrence of the Embden-Meyerhof cleavage and a second, undetermined, cleavage. The suggestion was based on the distribution of 14C in the products obtained by fermenting [1-14C]glucose, [2-l"C]glucose, [6-14C]glucose and [3:4-14C]glucose with cell suspensions. No matter which carbon at...
